The Lay Down ‘Down’ command can have its uses, but is also another novel trick to teach your dog. It is also an essential command for teaching your dog further, more difficult tricks such as ‘Roll Over’.
In order to teach your dog to lay down, he will need to know how to Sit and should be able to do it consistently with just a verbal command.
Teaching the ‘Down’ Command
When you think he’s ready, keep the treat closer to you, but in full view – away from the dogs nose and ask him to sit. When he does so use the ‘Down’ verbal command. If you need to bring the treat to the floor in front of you so he gets the idea, do so.
Make sure to finish the training on a positive note with petting and praise to encourage your dog to be interested when training sessions take place. They should be a positive and engaging activity.
When teaching commands you are working at the dogs pace, using repetition to help the dog identify what behaviour provides him with a treat. Dog’s are very clever and should soon be able to work out what it is they have to do to be rewarded.
All dogs are intelligent, but you will find that some breeds will pick simple commands up quicker than others.
