Boredom can often lead to physical destructive behaviour. A bored dog, will often become a mischievous one. The most common reason for boredom is being left alone for long stretches of time. Busy lives, and long days can leave your dog bored at home and looking for stimulation and entertainment.
Whilst you can’t be there to keep them company, there are things you can do to try and stop naughty behaviour from your dog when he’s left on his own.
Tiring your dog out.
Taking your dog for a high intensity walk before you leave can tire him out enough that he’ll spend the next few hours resting.
Provide a puzzle toy.
Almost all Pet Stores that stock dog toys will sell dog toys that can be filled with treats that will keep your dog entertained and busy while you’re away. Kong is a well known brand that manufactures several variations of the fillable puzzle toys and a range of flavoured stuffing and treats. Stuffing is available in a tube or if you prefer a less messy treat, solid treats are available.
Give your dog a block of ice.
You’d be surprised how entertained a dog can be when given a chunk of ice to chew and lick! Make sure it will melt in a tray or large bowl, and not on your floor.
Provide Chew Treats.
Rawhide is an edible treat that comes formed into different shapes and objects, but is commonly wrapped into bone shaped treats. They are cheap and readily available and for most dogs, will last a long time. In order for them to be effective, only give them to your dog just before you leave the house.
Get a dog walker
If you have the money, hiring a professional dog walker can be a great to keep your dog active and busy during the day. Though dog walking can be an enjoyable activity for dog owners, hiring a dog walker will also save you time.
Professional dog walkers charge normally charge by the hour of prices ranging between $10+ and will be required access to your home in order to take the dog out, so the person you chose will have to be trustworthy.
For most people, this in itself, plus the easily stacking price tag can be an off putting idea. If you have a responsible young neighbour, or know a younger family member who could do it for you for cheaper payment you might be able to arrange for them to carry out the service for you. Most young teenagers will be interested in earning extra money, particularly over the summer.
