The ‘Roll Over’ command is a fun and energetic trick that you can teach your dog. It is very similar in steps to the Lay Down command which is required to have been learnt first in order to teach your dog to Roll Over.
Get your dog’s attention by showing it the treat concealed in your hand and tell him to Sit. When he does give praise, but do not reward just yet.
Next tell him to Lay Down. When he does give praise, but do not reward yet.
When he has completed your ‘Lay Down’ command, still holding the treat, put it in front of your dogs nose and move it ever so slightly to one side of your dog, in front of him. He might paw at your fist or gently nibble at it, but you want him to roll onto his side. If he doesn’t seem to do so, gently roll him slowly onto his side with the words ‘Roll Over’ and praise with the treat.
Repeat the entire process again continually until the dog develops the understand of rolling onto his side.
Once he understands that roll over means onto his side, tell him to perform the command you have completed so far and move the treat to the other side of him so that he rolls over on his back to get back up. Use the command ‘Roll over’ when he does so and praise heavily.
Repeat this process again. It will be hard work, but patience is the key. Eventually your dog will develop the understanding that a complete roll over onto his side, then his back will be the trigger for a reward.
